New Pneumococcal Vaccine added to the Childhood Immunisation Programme

Pneumococcal vaccine has been added to the new immunisation programme, to give an increased protection against meningitis and septicaemia.  For approximately 50 children under the age of two, die from serious pneumococcal disease each year.

The new programme will start in September 2006.

There will be a catch up programme for all children under the age of two.
